Benign Nor Hostile, Merely Indifferent is designed to examine human relationships to the physical world as mediated by technological interactions and scientific observation. This piece is an elaborate means of viewing or not viewing a microcosmic struggle that is beyond the control of the individual viewer. A critical exploration of a societal fascination with digitized experience, Benign Nor Hostile, Merely Indifferent offers a glimpse into the changing nature of human relationships to our origins.

Benign Nor Hostile, Merely Indifferent is comprised of three systems:

1. Customized programming designed to analyze sound levels in individual quadrants of the gallery and convert them into digital signals and graphics representative of the frequency and loudness of sounds produced by viewers.

2. Purpose-built UV illumination system that converts the digital signals into UV light outputs.

3. E. coli Bacteria that have undergone a transgenic transformation (genetic modification) allowing them to fluoresce under UV light application. Under UV excitation the bacteria express in green and red.

Farnsworth Additions is a simple bio-art project where I inoculated an LB plate with samples taken from surfaces residing in modernist architecture. Under the LB was placed a blue print of the Farnsworth House which was designed and constructed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe between 1945-51. Farnsworth Additions is an examination of the misplaced and largely de-humanizing nature of modernist architecture and the fascination with cleanliness and sterility in form and concept designed to better the lives of those who occupy it and the subsequent adoption of the style by major corporations and governments. (More complete documentation coming soon)

Human Geography v2.1 is a continuation of a collaboration, HG v1.1 executed through a differing process. These images represent the initial tests of utilizing sound to affect the production of photographic prints done through classical wet processes instead of digital fabrications as in v1.1.

Human Geography v2.1 attempts to visualize the conversations and sounds experienced between two people through photographic means. v2.1 is trying to reduce the technological mediation of the experience to a more direct and physical transfer of the experience depicted.

Ideals is an examination of the mid-century modernist housing developments of Calgary AB, the city I grew up in but haven't called home in quite some time. Designed with the best of intentions to provide affordable housing in the rapidly growing city, these monotonous boxes now permeate the collective psyche of the citizens of Calgary, yet don't carry enough weight to avoid a similar future.

These images are two from a larger body of work that examines the societal and architectural development of one of the fastest growing and wealthiest cities on the continent. Ideals is designed to ask whether we have made any headway in the fostering a sense of community in the relentless pursuit of progress.

The approximate printed size of these images is 144" x 70" & 144" x 210".

A continuation of my Distance series, v10.1 is rather macabre in its intent. Placed inside a birch box is a bamboo stalk. Attached to the stalk is a cable that is slowly released as the plant grows. The cable slowly releases and the lid gradually shuts enclosing the bamboo in darkness. The plant is in a race to escape the box before it shuts.

Apprentice is a proof of concept piece that utilizes photoresistors as a mode to control a sound output. The work takes the varying light levels produced by a projection and converts them into an undulating soundscape representative of the light being evaluated. The projection come courtesy a small camera mounted on the tripod (difficult to see in the images). A television is set up behind the computer and plays scenes from live pop-culture TV phenomenon and displays them on the wall opposite the projector. In the path of the projector and below the camera is a 16:9 aspect ratio array of photoresistors. As the light levels vary, the sound being transmitted changes.

This piece entitled JM101 – Distance continues my research into the role of the human being in the processes of the natural world. Some view humans as a net detractor from the intended course of biological development, while others argue that it was an inevitability, and thus a natural evolution, for humans to develop into creatures able to manipulate their physical surroundings, but more importantly modify the most essential elements of what defines biological life.

JM101 is a particular strain of E, coli. Itself usually defined by humans as a negative entity, one that has a destructive capacity. What is over looked is the actual function of E. Coli. It has a useful function in the body by suppressing the growth of harmful bacterial species and by synthesizing appreciable amounts of vitamins.

I’ve setup a paradox of existence. The piece is surrounded by something nourishing yet it is slowly destroying itself through an elaborate apparatus of control.

Like Protista Imperialis, I am attempting to bring an educated and aware viewer into a contemplative space where they can, on a microcosmic level, evaluate the human situation. We, like the E. coli are in a similar predicament. It asks what is life? What life is of value? What does it take to sustain it? Can anything be done to stop its destruction?

Mossy Hill v1.0 was a very simple installation where a grass floor was installed into an elevator. This elevator was one of two elevators available to use by the public in a 7 floor building. The nature of the elevator was such that realistically only 3 floors were ever frequented, the first floor offering the most consistent entry point. Typically both elevators would be on the same floor at any giving potential viewers the option of taking the elevator fitted with a grass floor, or a normal elevator. Overwhelmingly individuals chose to ride the floor with the grass floor. Through a series of cameras and recorders I was able to monitor the feelings expressed by those riding the elevator. The elevator occupants unknowingly became performers as they created a spectacle through their unmitigated exuberance related to this introduction of nature into a typically sterile, and alienating environment.

With each ascent or descent of the elevator, more and more people would pack into the space until it reached its physical capacity. A large number of individuals would forgo their typical routine and spend vast amounts of time simply riding the elevator. The performance would perpetuate itself as the door would open to an unsuspecting individual suddenly faced with an elevator packed with individuals simply enjoying the experience for extended periods. This unsuspecting viewer would often become a performer as they too were swept up in the event, become enchanted with the experience, and then relay their exuberance to the next unsuspecting individual.

Through the Cracks intends discusses the role religion may have played in the societal distancing from our physical biological reality, and engage questions relating the the possible ramifications of misinterpretation of religious teachings.

By extrapolating the floor plan of St Peter's Basilica into three dimensions by way of 3d print technologies, I was able to create a mold of depicting the building. I then filled the mold with animal fat, blood, water, and gelatin. I placed the resulting sculpture on a surface where it could be viewed. As the room heated up, the sculpture slowly melted, and I captured the process photographically.
